Walking into Newband’s studio for the first time is like stepping into a science-fiction movie set for an Inter-Galactic Jam: it’s impossible to imagine how all these outlandish instruments will actually sound. The music on this recording is based on completely different tuning systems than the common Western 12-note scale, and even the performers playing familiar instruments are required to stretch their techniques beyond the conventional. Newband is unquestionably one of the most unique and accomplished chamber groups performing today. It performs a repertoire based on unusual instruments and microtonal tunings with a virtuosity that has been recognized world-wide. Since its founding by Dean Drummond in 1977, Newband has championed the most innovative music of our time, while steadily acquiring a comprehensive collection of exotic instruments. After its proclaimed production of Harry Partch’s The Wayward at the 1991 “Bang on a Can” Festival, the group received the entire Partch Instrument collection on permanent loan. Now Artists-in-Residence at the Music Division of the State University of New York at Purchase, the group has appeared at the New York Philharmonic Horizons Concerts at Aver Fisher Hall, New Music America, The Third Coast New Music Project, Quebec ’84, Merkin Concert Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, World Music Days in Oslo, De Ijsbreker (Amsterdam), the Library of Congress, and the Museum of Modern Art.
